I've been sick all weekend and motivation is down. I think I got the
same bug that my roommate has. I'm getting a bit behind in numbers so I
plan on kicking it up a notch next week. I've been very busy with work
lately and on the road a lot. I spent a few days in Whitecourt last
week, I was there the day after all the excitement happened. While
staying at the hotel with little to do I started working on a customized
spreadsheet to keep track of my numbers. I've never kept track of
numbers electronically before so it will be a shift. I'm going to try
and be more organized this year.
Now that we don't have
regular Tuesdays and Thursday practices (well Thursday looks like it
might be on again) I find my schedule is up in the air. I can't remember
the last time I was at regular Monday/Wednesday classes. I'm going to
try and go to those classes more regularly.

Short Blog
This is a short Blog, as I have been studying for then
writing my mid-term exam in my Master Electrician Prep course. The exam was allotted
five hours to write, I took about 3.5 hours. The exam will be mailed tomorrow
morning to NAIT. The final is coming up,
it is allotted 7 hours (3.5 x 2).Once I am done that, I go off to write the
actual government exam, also 7 hours (again two 3.5 hour sessions).
As a side note, I have now identified that the kitchen chair
I have been using to work on my course is partially responsible for my sore
back, so I will exchange it with an office chair for the next while. The reason
I am using the kitchen chair & table was that the course sat on my desk,
out of sight, out of mind, for too long. I moved to the kitchen table so it was
in my face every day and now I should be able to finish on time, although I
know where all my free time in March is going...
David Suzuki, The good Doctor is not in...
I am not an overly active environmentalist but I do believe
in doing my part to lead a healthy and somewhat “green” lifestyle. I believe in sustainable living and I believe
in knowing where my food comes from as much as possible. I recycle as much as possible and try and
reduce my “carbon foot print” as much as possible.Kung
Fu has taught me allot about this aspect of my life. I am much more
active now than I have ever been. However David Suzuki is a hypocrite
and lacks humbleness of any kind. With so many people hanging off his
words and his place as a "leader" in the environmental movement, David
Suzuki needs to spend some time in our Kwoon. He would learn a thing or
two about ego and humbleness.
As you can tell by now the one thing I have never been of is a fan of David Suzuki. You can sure tell a lot about a person by the
way they respond to being challenged. Those
with courage of conviction and the confidence that comes with real intellect
will back their positions and rise to the occasion. Those whose sense of ego is
mightier than their strength of character will retreat, resort to insults or
not respond altogether.
So when David Suzuki – environmental guru, would-be benevolent dictator and all-around perfect human – arrived in Ottawa Tuesday evening to tell a church filled with a paying audience what a sustainable future looks like, he shocked his own loyal supporters by aggressively refusing to speak with a Sun News reporter and her cameraman (who’d only arrived after a media release about the event from the Green Party was sent to the national press corps). David Suzuki didn’t just refuse to speak to the reporter and her camera man. He refused to appear altogether, sending a handful of hostile event organizers to remove them from the premises. They would, eventually, but not before creating a real drama in front of a real audience that exposed the real nature of David Suzuki.
Suzuki never showed his face. The man who believes he leads by example, illuminates inconvenient truths and feels righteously empowered to bring down those he feels do wrong, refuses to be held to account. His critics, he believes, should be silenced.
David Suzuki encourages curiosity, critical thinking, questioning the world around you. Just don’t question him.

Have you seen a bully today?
I don't remember being bullied at school. First of all, it was not an issue people talked about as much as it is right now. Second, I was always big enough to avoid being physically bullied. And third, I think I was oblivious to bullies around me.
These days I'm more concern about bullies. The thought of one of my kids being bullied at school is not letting go. I'm really hoping they are going to feel they can talk with me if something happens.
We were talking about bullying last week in the Advance Black Dragons class (great job done by Sifu Vantuil) and I was wondering how many of these kids are being bullied. Then I was wondering how many of these kids' parents are being bullied at work. I don't believe bullying stops when you grow-up. And then I was wondering if there is anyone that ever felt like he is being bullied at Kung Fu by a fellow student or an instructor. Have you seen a bully today?

Shifting Gears
So here I finally sit, snow plowing and shoveling done and
the energy of a wet sponge (2.5 hours later).
All this wet snow must be worth a few push ups??? This last week has been kind of a down one
for me. I’ve been fighting a bit of a
bug that has been trying to surface for a couple of weeks and add to that
fighting with migraines all week (was probably an indication of what the
weather had in store for us, just ask Mrs. Donahues birds).
For the last couple of weeks I have been trying to shift gears
from banquet preparation, to starting a new I Ho Chuan year. I’ve found myself a little lost as I realize
that my schedule is not as full and that I don’t have to race around trying to
slot things in and make special arrangements to get everyone where they need to
be. It’s an adjustment I am glad to be
working on right now.
With the start of a New Year, is the start of a new weapon;
the broad sword. As I have been playing
with and trying to feel a little more comfortable with this piece, I am back to
the feeling of something new and awkward.
I’ve been reminding myself how frightening I was with my nunchuks at the
beginning of last year and am trying to reassure myself that this too will come
to feel (and look) more graceful. I’ve been fighting with my shoulders and
having to be careful with just how much playing I do. Anything with a lot of rotation, especially
repeatedly is something I need to watch in order to prevent an increase in
numbness and pain. So I get to practice
progressing wisely!
Well off to walk my dog and try to enjoy all the snow and
the bit of sunshine trying to come out!

Not Thursday
The team is getting together on Thursday evenings to get in more practice time. The problem being, Thursday is one of the only free days I have at home and I cannot give it up. It is important that everyone is aware that I will not be there on these nights as I have to find that balance between the team and my family. I am concerned that when it comes time to start preparing for demos, that Thursdays may become a common thing. There is more I feel I should write about this but I think we can cover that in our next team meeting.
