Mud Hero: Reality Check

First of all Mud Hero weekend was one of the best weekends of my life that was shared with some of the best people in the world! The support and camaraderie were unbelievable not to mention the mountain of laughs, fun, and mud. Took me a couple of days to Q-tip all of the mud out of my ears and I had to shovel the soak water out a few times, but hey, my electric spandex are once again electric!

Yes I was nervous (very) going in but once the race started and the group formed, I started to have fun. The course was tough especially the uphill climb but I did it. Then the self-deflating kicked in. I didn't do the race as good as Krysta or as whomever because I wasn't as fast as what they were. Then a reality check came: I did do just as good as everyone else, I finished the race (respecting my shoulder) and that's what counts. Sifu Masterson told me to check the stats and the next reality check came in. I wasn't first, but I sure wasn't last. In fact, in my age group I was middle of the pack and overall came in ahead of 3000 people. My time was only a few minutes off the average time. It's time for me to start seeing where I actually am and not believing a facade based on yesteryear.

Mud Heros, to me, was more than a race and even more than the bonding and support. I learned about myself, about what I can do, what I am capable of, and where I don't stand in my excellence. Even more than that, it lit a fire for something I want to do more of and train for. Mud Heros next year, you bet. Hey Spartan 5 km is in Edmonton, just sayin'......

Thanks to the awesome team for the amazing experience and support. We all look awesome in mud! FYI and assuming the race is in the same place next year, Dennis and I scoped out (and marked on the map) the campground for sites where we can camp together (but still individual) as a group and have a central common place to gather, playground and potty right close.
