Passion

I recently read an Autobiography by a sports hero of mine from when I was a young guy.  He was a successful hockey player in the late 60's early 70's that had about a 10 year professional career.  He talked over and over in his book that for someone to achieve at the highest levels in their chosen field or a personal pursuit there is one thing that is needed above all else.

This thing  will over come injuries.  This player has numerous knee surgeries throughout his playing career and eventually had to have his knees replaced as most of the cartilage was taken out.

This thing will over come not having as much talent as the next guy.  All though this individual had a lot of talent he attributed it to being on the ice as often as he could from a young age.  He would be on the ice before school and after school.  He was first at the rink before practice and a game.  It wasn't because his parents and coaches asked him to do it he did it because it was what he wanted to do.

This thing  will also over come the times when you are worn out and when you physically and mentally do not feel like doing any more.

What he was talking about was a pure passion for what you are doing.  That you do what is necessary to achieve at the highest level you set for yourself. But in order to achieve at that level, passion has to be there above talent and everything else.

I found this definition of passion which I thought was appropriate for this years team:

A man with passion rides a horse  that runs away with him.

I talk about this as I am happy that at this stage of my life,  fate, Karma, or what anyone wants to call it,  brought me to Kung Fu.  I have found something that truly inspires me and I hope my passion continues through this year of I Ho Chuan and into the future.

By the way the athlete is Bobby Orr.
